Topics

Submissions through a broad range of smart card evolution phases are encouraged and may address one or more of the mentioned topics or others you believe to be of great interest for the audience.

Java 3.0: New Opportunities:

The launching of Java 3.0 in 2006 will open wide the door to many new opportunities for developers and innovating players. We welcome presentations related to most aspects of the new standard and in particular applications in the following domains: DRM and content protection, contactless, biometry, security…

Terminals & Devices:

The world of card acceptance devices is quickly developing, fostered by 3 main domains:
- e-Government with devices relying on biometry technologies, and
- globalisation of EMV
- secure mobile environment for mobile finance services
The contributions are expected to cover these domains by providing new insight on their 2006 issues and solutions.

Cooperative Projects:

Partnership and cooperation are the key words of success in Smart Card Innovation.
We encourage all contributions that present cooperative projects and their results at any level (international, European, national and/or academic).

Operating Systems for Secure Devices:

Now more than ever smart cards need true underlying OS to support concurrent applications and their management. This session will cover the requirements for these OS and the different solutions brought to the market by the industry

Mobile Telecommunications (SIM/USIMs):

The main SC market is moving very fast and its technologies are raising new hot issues and topics to cover like:
- Higher I/O speed interfaces between the UICC and the handset
- Implementation of contactless interfaces to enlarge the number of applications available on the UICC (Transport payment, proximity transactions ...)
- How will the Operators take advantage of the availability of bigger memory size (128MB) UICCs?
- Starting from the assumption that many features are available in terms of standardized specs in the smart card environment, how can Operators cooperate to achieve the same availability on the handset side to achieve full interoperability?
- Flash memory vs. chip technology or integrated solutions.

Security:

The various recent and new governmental regulations concerning security make necessary for "e-Smart" to present a wide state of the art in every domain related to smart card security and in particular the following domains:
- International regulations and mutual recognition:
- Status on the existing and emerging regulation aspects in the EU but also in other parts of the world concerning systems and products security
- Methodology & evaluation techniques:
- To review the new potential attacks on smartcard security mechanisms. Are those new attacks pertinent or are they just the result of pure imagination by scientists or hackers? Can they be used by real pirates?
- To debate on system security composition: how various security mechanisms can interact in a system ? Is it possible to design and use a system that presents vulnerabilities as a result of cost constraints (for implementing new security mechanisms), complexity of testing or even legislative and market constraints? What is the impact of security evaluations and certifications on the products and applications life cycle ? How does it fit with technology rapid changes?
- to review the methodologies used to prove security (evaluation methodologies) and to certify the products and systems
- Implementation:
- Cooperative security in implementation and issuance: how the operators and all the actors in the value chain will cooperate in order to implement and prove the relevant security features in order to protect all necessary assets for all kind of commercial transactions including digital rights protection, privacy protection using the new generation of mobile-communication?
- Products & applications life cycle management

2006 Isabelle Attali Award

In 2005, "e-Smart" initiated an award dedicated to the memory of Isabelle Attali, who was one of the researchers that launched the Java Card Workshop (1st edition of "e-Smart" in 2000). Isabelle was also the program chair of the second edition of "e-Smart".

The award honours the most innovative work presented during the "e-Smart" conference. The award ceremony will take place during the conference.

Selection Committee:
Richard Bricaire (Strategies Telecoms & Multimedia), Christian Goire (Java Card Forum), Marieke Huisman (Inria), Pierre Paradinas (CNAM), Jean-Jacques Quisquater (UCL University of Louvain)

Isabelle Attali Award 2005 was given to:
Prof. Serge Chaumette - LaBRI, University of Bordeaux and his team for his work:
"A Grid of Java Cards to Deal with Security Demanding Applications Domains"
