In order to understand the possibilities of biometrics
in real life use, it is important to know the basics of
the technology and its underlying principles. This biometrics
module paves the way from basic understanding to the practical
use of biometrics. It provides insights into the scientific
backgrounds of biometrics as well as into the three most
relevant biometric modalities: fingerprint, face and iris
recognition. In addition, attention will be paid to biometric
fusion, i.e. the combination of two or more biometric
modalities and to template protection, which is the technique
to securely store biometric information. In addition to
these technical issues, this course also covers the legal
and business aspects that are necessary for the design
and deployment of successful implementations.
