The challenge: portable storage devices security risk

The multiplication of portable storage devices in large enterprises and government agencies challenges the IT security managers. How to allow powerful tools for its workforce while keeping the data on these tools fully protected and under its central control?

Innovative vision: split storage of the data

Splitstreem’s answer is that high level of data security and workforce productivity should not be mutually exclusive, but rather these two should be combined to achieve best performance. Splitstreem’s co-founders took their inspiration from mobile TV encryption system: in this invention, the TV data stream is split into two parts. Most of it is conveyed through the air, but a small part is transferred through a 3G mobile phone connection. This small fragment is sent separately to each user, which means that the users are precisely known. In Splitstreem’s encryption system, Splitstick, 99% of the required information is stored on the memory stick but the rest of the data resides on a server, which makes it possible to control its access.

The solution: Splitstick

Splitstick works with any regular off-the-shelf USB Flash Drives, USB Hard Drives, and Series60 Smartphone Memory Cards. The protection is fully automatic, transparent, and completely independent of any user action or decisions. From the user’s viewpoint, there are no passwords to remember or certificates to tinker with. Envaulting-based Splitstick protects the contents of the employees’ USB storage devices against loss, theft, and even leaving employees. It identifies devices automatically and ensures that no data goes on them unprotected.

The innovator

Splitstreem is based in Finland.
