The ETSI’s Smart Card Platform Technical Committee have approved the specification for the Host Controller Interface.

The European Telecoms Standardization Institute has published the Host Controller Interface (HCI) specification. HCI is aimed at providing a standardized way to host secure applications on the SIM and to perform wireless data communications with the NFC chip in the phone. The specification implie the use of the Single Wire Protocol (SWP) within the physical layers, protocol approved by ETSI last October.

The ETSI specification meets the expectations of most NFC market players, paving the way for secure ticketing, payments and access control with a mobile handset. Chairman of ETSI’s Smart Card Platform Technical Committee, Klaus Vedder said: "These new SIM properties are another important step towards turning today’s mobile phone into a multipurpose terminal, personal security device and lifestyle tool and I look forward to having many fruitful and cooperative conversations with stakeholders in the weeks and months ahead."
